3 Ways to Keep Up To Date With the IT Industry
It’s a universally accepted truth amongst those working somewhere in the IT industry that technology stands still for no man. The relentless pace of technology advances is simply mind blowing! Think about where we were even as little as 2 years ago and you can see just how much has changed.
And I’ve got some news for you – it’s only getting faster!
So how are we to keep up with the ever increasing body of knowledge we need to do our jobs? Well here are 3 ways:
Leverage the Twitter-verse
Twitter is used for a lot of different things by lots of different people. From politicians trying to seem hip and cool to student movements sticking it to the man Twitter is definitely a tool for our modern age. It has also been adopted by IT thought leaders as a bulletin board, a soap box from which they can share their latest ideas and inventions. The key is finding these wells of knowledge.
The best way to find those in the know is by following someone you know who always seems to have their finger on the pulse. Chances are if you look at the people they are following there’ll be some names you are familiar with and you can follow these people. Then look at the people the thought leaders are following and so on. It won’t be long before you’ll have a comprehensive list of IT thought leaders posting their insights all over your Twitter feed.
Follow a few IT news blogs
This one should be obvious. There are literally hundreds of blogs out there relating to the IT industry but of course you can’t possibly keep up with all of them. So what are you to do?
One strategy would be to follow an IT news aggregator such as Tech Crunch or Hacker News. These sites can be used to browse through to look for topics of interest. Even just reading the article titles will be helpful as it will alert you to buzzwords in the industry.
You should also choose the blogs of a couple of IT industry leaders to follow closely. Rather than only checking these daily or weekly you can subscribe to their posts and read every article you have time for. This will expose you to the expert’s way of thinking and give you a real insight into their process for solving problems. Use a tool such as Feedly so you never miss an article.
Listen to podcasts
Podcasts are pretty much everywhere these days. They certainly have their place but it isn’t as a tool for absorbing technical ideas or in-depth thought patterns. Instead use them as a way to learn concepts and to keep up-to-date with the latest trends.
Podcasts are good because they allow you to multitask and also to leverage our speed of audio processing. Use time spent travelling, exercising or anything other time where you are physically engaged but not mentally focused to listen to your favourite podcasters.
Another tip is it listen to the recordings at 1.5x or even 2x speed. This will allow you to get through a much larger amount of content and because you are only using this to pick up buzzwords you can listen without fear of missing the finer details. (Note: it is best to start listening at lower speeds first and work your way up. Apps such as RSSRadio allow you to increase to speed at your own pace in fine increments.)
So there you have it, by following these simple tips in less than 30 minutes a day you can easily keep up-to-date with the IT industry.
